Master of Industrial Statistics
College of Arts and Sciences
The Department of Statistics in the College of Arts and Sciences offers the Master in Industrial Statistics using satellite delivery to USC campuses and other viewing sites statewide. The program is geared towards two populations: 1) people who are currently working in business, government or industrial settings or 2) teachers who are interested in enhancing their content knowledge through an advanced degree. The program emphasizes the statistical tools and consulting skills necessary for a successful statistical practitioner in the workplace. While some theory is introduced, the focus is on applications of statistics and on how statistics can be used to improve quality in an organization or process.
Graduates of this type of program are in high demand as the supply of trained professionals is much smaller than the demand from industrial settings. Program graduates have a high placement rate (98 percent).
Admissions Requirements
For admission to The Graduate School, a baccalaureate or higher degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency is normally required. Applicants should submit a complete application packet including official transcripts of college academic work, letters of recommendation, and official score on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). The Graduate Bulletin and Admission Application are available online.
In addition to the above, the applicant should have three semesters of calculus. Applicants who are admitted without the calculus courses will be required to complete them before beginning the Master's program. Applicants should have two or more years of full-time work in business, industry, or government equivalent.
Degree Requirements
The Master of Industrial Statistics requires at least 36 hours of approved coursework and includes a core curriculum of seven courses (21 semester hours).
