School of Library and Information Science

The School of Library and Information Science offers courses that use live televised instruction, videotaped instruction as well as computer based technologies, that benefit degree-seeking students as well as professionals in the field of library information science. These courses are open to degree seeking students. The program prepares professionals to work in school, public, and academics, legal, health, and business libraries and information centers.

Admissions Requirements

For admission to The Graduate School, a baccalaureate or higher degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency is normally required. Applicants must have earned a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regional accrediting agency. Applicants should submit a complete application packet including official transcripts of college academic work, letters of recommendation, and official scores. The Graduate Bulletin and Admission Application are available online.

In addition to the above, applicants should submit the supplemental information.

Admission to the School of Library and Information Science is selective and is based on the faculty’s assessment of the applicant’s aptitude for graduate study and potential contribution to the profession. SLIS takes a holistic approach to the admissions process. Consequently, an applicant’s entire file is taken into consideration before an admission decision is made.

Degree Requirements

For the MLIS degree, an approved program of at least 36 semester hours of graduate course work must be completed with a minimum grade point ratio of 3.0 on all courses. There are 18 hours in required courses and a minimum of 18 hours in electives. At least 24 hours must be taken within the School and the remaining 12 hours may be taken in related areas.
