Master of Social Work

College of Social Work

The College of Social Work offers a part-time program of study for students located in the Upstate area whose circumstance make it impossible for them to attend school on a full-time basis. In this program, students can complete the Master of Social Work degree curriculum in approximately three years of organized part-time study. Students residing in this area of the state can complete most of the required foundation courses without traveling to the Columbia area. The regional programs offer only the Advanced Practice with Individuals, Families, and Groups concentration. The concentration in advanced practice with organizations and communities (macro) is not offered in Greenville. Students who would like to pursue studies in Advanced Practices with Organizations and Communities should plan to attend classes in Columbia. Part-time programs require a longer time to complete degree requirements and will require students to enroll in summer courses. 60 HOURS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE DEGREE.

The first four of the foundation courses are regularly offered on-line. Students may be present online for the class sessions using Adobe Connect on Wednesdays, 6 - 9 p.m. or may view the class at a later time. Students in their second and third year will take classes at the University Center on Saturdays from 9am-4pm and must be enrolled in a field placement internship two days a week. Please visit http://www.cosw.sc.edu/part-time-program for more details about part-time program options.

The College of Social Work has a number of approved field placement options throughout the LowCountry and Upstate areas. Students enrolled in either cohort are able to complete the field placement requirements in Charleston/Greenville and surrounding areas. MSW students enrolled in the Part Time Programs do not start field until their second year in the program. Students are required to complete 15 -16 hours per week of field placement. The College has a small number of placements that offer students non-traditional hours. These placements are limited to specific agencies and locations, applications for these opportunities are very competitive. If you are working full time you should begin planning well in advance for balancing your work, class, and personal commitments during the last two years of the program.

Admissions Requirements

For admission to The Graduate School, a baccalaureate or higher degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting agency is required. Applicants should submit a complete application packet including official transcripts of college academic work from all schools previously attended, two letters of recommendation, resume and an autobiographical statement. An applicant, whoe has not attained a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale or above, in their upper level undergraduate, courses (junior and senior level courses), must take the GRE or submit GRE scores as additional evidence of capacity to pursue graduate studies. For more details about the admissions process, please visit http://www.cosw.sc.edu/msw-admissions-criteria.

Admission to the master’s degree program is on a selective basis and is determined by the academic preparation and personal qualifications of the applicant. It is also expected that the applicant will have a sound educational foundation with a liberal arts perspective. Intellectual maturity, emotional stability, and motivation and capacity to work with people are essential qualifications.

Openings for admissions are limited, and competition is considerable. Individuals are selected for admission from the pool of applicants. Persons will be selected who have the strongest qualifications in terms of the College’s admission criteria: grade point average, GRE scores, autobiography (content and writing quality), references, work and volunteer experience, and commitment to social work values.
